Good news!  A date ...Friday 16th December 2016... has finally been confirmed for 'Local Charities Day'.

The idea was first announced by Rob Wilson, the Minister for Civil Society, back in the summer and was conceived of as a way to boost giving and raise the profile of small locally based charities and community groups.

In a speech, at the time, Wilson said he was "only too aware" that small charities had been affected by the poor fundraising practices of some larger organisations and he wanted to do something to help.

As part of the announcement today, the government also confirmed that it will  match £245,000 worth of funding  to support Localgiving’sGrow Your Tennercampaign.

The Grow Your Tenner scheme has raised more than £5 million for local charities and community groups across the UK over the past five years and has proven to be a simple and effective way to boost funds for local good causes. This time the scheme will match one time donations of up to £10 as well as monthly direct debits up to £10 for the first three months.

This is really positive news.

As we know from our work with Big Local there is a huge wealth of energy, passion and commitment to be found in small, locally based organisations and charities. They deliver a huge impact with so very little so it’s encouraging to see a drive to ensure they get their fair share of donations but are also celebrated and recognised for their often invisible and unsung work locally.
